This site is a personal blog written and run by me, Harry Winser. It collects a small amount of information about which pages get read. This page explains exactly what that is. If anything here is unclear, or you’d like something removed, email me at harry@harrywinser.com.

What the analytics collect

When you open a page, your browser sends one short message to an analytics service that I built and run myself. Each record holds:

the path of the page you opened, for example /posts/welcome/
the date and time
the user agent string your browser sends with every request
a rough device type: phone, tablet, desktop or TV
an approximate city and country

That is the whole record. There is no cookie, no account, no visitor ID, and nothing stored on your device. Your IP address is used for a moment by the content delivery network to work out the approximate city and country, and is not written to the database.

Because nothing in the record identifies your browser, I cannot tell whether two page views came from the same person, follow you from one page to the next, or recognise you when you come back. I use it to see which posts people read, and that is all.

My lawful basis for this is legitimate interests under Article 6(1)(f) of the UK GDPR: I want to know which of my posts are worth writing more of, using the least information I could reasonably manage. I do not sell this data, share it, or use it for advertising. I delete these records once they are two years old.

Other things that load on this site

A few parts of the site ask your browser to fetch things from other companies. When that happens, those companies receive your IP address and user agent, as they would for any site you visit:

Google Fonts. Typefaces are loaded from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com, which are run by Google.
YouTube. A few posts have a video embedded in them. These all use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com player, which does not set cookies unless you choose to press play.
Hosting. The site is served by Amazon Web Services, who handle the request in order to send you the page.

I have no control over what those companies do with what they receive, and their own privacy policies apply.

The light and dark setting

If you switch the site between light and dark mode, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so the site remembers it next time. It stays on your device, is never sent anywhere, and clearing your browser data removes it.

Your rights

Under the UK GDPR you have the right to ask what data I hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office. In practice the analytics records are not linked to you in any way, so there is usually nothing I can find, hand over or delete on request. If you have a question about any of this, email me and I will answer it honestly.
